Developing Communication, Business Analysis, and Professional Skills through the MBKM Independent Internship at Hilton Bali Resort
Merdeka Belajar Kampus Merdeka (MBKM) program provides valuable opportunities for students to gain practical learning experiences beyond the classroom. Through this program, I, Theodora Livia Nona Filani, a student of the Japanese Literature Study Program, had the opportunity to participate in an Independent Internship as a Marketing Communications, Department of Commercial at Hilton Bali Resort for approximately five months. This experience marked an important step in introducing me to the professional world within the international hospitality industry, particularly in the commercial department, which plays a vital role in driving sales, maintaining business partnerships, and supporting the hotel's marketing strategies. Throughout the internship, I not only learned about the company's operational processes but also gained an understanding of how collaboration among different departments contributes to achieving business objectives and delivering excellent guest experiences.
During the internship, I was involved in various activities that supported the Commercial Department's daily operations. My responsibilities included managing sales data, preparing Online Travel Agent (OTA) performance reports, monitoring promotional campaigns and marketing programs, updating internal systems, and assisting with administrative tasks related to sales activities. In addition, I had the opportunity to learn about digital marketing strategies through online booking platforms and support the team in analyzing sales performance using available business data.
Through these experiences, I realized that a hotel's success depends not only on excellent guest service but also on well-planned business strategies supported by accurate data analysis. I learned how to process and interpret sales data into meaningful insights that support business decision-making. This experience strengthened my analytical thinking, attention to detail, and understanding of the importance of data accuracy in developing effective marketing and sales strategies. These learning experiences align with the objectives of the MBKM program, which encourages students to apply academic knowledge in real professional environments while enhancing critical thinking and adaptability.
Beyond technical competencies, this internship significantly improved my soft skills. I learned how to work professionally in an international workplace, communicate effectively with colleagues from different departments, complete tasks within deadlines, and adapt to a dynamic working environment. Working under the operational standards of a global hospitality company also taught me the importance of discipline, responsibility, accuracy, and teamwork in achieving common organizational goals.
One of the most memorable aspects of this internship was the opportunity to observe how an international hotel develops business strategies based on market trends and customer behavior. I gained valuable insights into the importance of digital technology, sales performance analysis, and collaboration with business partners in strengthening the hotel's competitiveness. Interacting with experienced professionals also broadened my understanding of workplace ethics, service excellence, and the professional culture within the hospitality industry.
Through my internship experience at Hilton Bali Resort, I realized that experiential learning through the MBKM program is an invaluable opportunity for students to prepare for their future careers. The program not only enhances academic knowledge and professional competencies but also develops personal character, responsibility, adaptability, and self-confidence in facing the challenges of today's competitive industry. I hope that more students will take advantage of the MBKM program, as the experience provides valuable preparation for building successful professional careers in the future.
