Developing Communication Skills and Social Awareness through the MBKM Independent Internship at Annika Linden Centre

The Merdeka Belajar Kampus Merdeka (MBKM) program provides a valuable opportunity for students to gain learning experiences beyond the classroom. Through this program, I, Aurely Pradnya Mozza Irawan, a Japanese Literature student, had the opportunity to participate in an Independent Internship as a Communication Intern at Annika Linden Centre for approximately five months. This experience became an important first step for me to directly explore the professional world, particularly in the field of communication focused on social issues and inclusivity. It was not only about completing assigned tasks, but also about understanding how a social organization develops messages, reaches its audience, and creates a meaningful impact on society.

During the internship, I was involved in a variety of activities. These included managing social media, creating educational content, designing visual materials, and documenting organizational events. In addition, I also had the opportunity to assist in organizing and supporting programs and activities conducted by Annika Linden Centre.

Through this experience, I came to understand that communication is not merely about delivering information, but also about ensuring that the message is well received by the audience. The content creation process encouraged me to think more creatively, starting from generating ideas, adjusting language style, and ensuring that the message remains relevant and impactful. This aligns with the MBKM learning concept, which encourages students to learn contextually through real world experiences, thereby enhancing critical thinking and adaptability in facing professional challenges.

Beyond technical skills, this internship also provided valuable lessons in soft skills. I learned how to work collaboratively in a team, communicate effectively with various stakeholders, and manage time and responsibilities in a professional manner.

One of the most memorable aspects of this program was the opportunity to gain a deeper understanding of disability issues and the importance of inclusivity in society. As an organization dedicated to these issues, Annika Linden Centre offered new insights that I had not previously explored in depth. Through various activities and interactions, I realized that inclusivity must be implemented through real actions in the workplace, education, and everyday life. The communication platforms I managed during the internship also served as a medium for public education, which strengthened my understanding of the role of communication in raising social awareness.

Through this experience, I realized that learning opportunities outside the classroom such as MBKM are incredibly valuable and should not be overlooked. This program provides a platform for students to grow, explore their interests, and gain direct insight into the professional world. I hope that more students will be encouraged to participate in and make the most of the MBKM program, as the experience not only enhances academic abilities but also contributes to character development and readiness to face global challenges.
