Enhancing Broadcasting Competence through the Independent MBKM Internship Program at LPP RRI Denpasar
A weekly columnist for The Wall Street Journal, Peggy Noonan, once said, “TV gives everyone an image, but radio gives birth to a million images in a million brains.” This statement truly resonates with my personal experience during the opportunity to take part in an internship at LPP Radio Republik Indonesia (RRI) Denpasar.
Hello, my name is Lunar Liva Lazore, an undergraduate student of Japanese Literature at Udayana University. On this occasion, I would like to share my experience participating in the Independent Internship Program organized by the Faculty of Cultural Sciences, Udayana University. This program is part of the Independent Merdeka Belajar Kampus Merdeka (MBKM) initiative launched by the Faculty of Cultural Sciences. The Independent Internship Program provides students with opportunities to learn and develop themselves through internship activities outside the classroom, in collaboration with various government and private institutions, one of which is Lembaga Penyiaran Publik Radio Republik Indonesia Denpasar, commonly known as LPP RRI Denpasar.
Located at Jalan Hayam Wuruk No. 70, East Denpasar, LPP RRI Denpasar serves as a public broadcasting institution that provides information, education, healthy entertainment, and acts as a social unifier for the community, while upholding the values of independence, neutrality, and public interest. LPP RRI Denpasar plays an important role in disseminating accurate, educational, and balanced information to the people of Bali, while also serving as a public dialogue space between the government, stakeholders, and the wider community. Within LPP RRI Denpasar, there are several divisions, and during my internship, I was assigned to the broadcasting and news division. I was given five main tasks each day, depending on the schedule that day. These five main tasks are:
1. Serving as a Co-Host for the Pro 1 Dialogue Program
In this role, I acted as a co-host in interactive dialogue programs on Pro 1, broadcast at 09.00 WITA, 11.00 WITA, and 13.30 WITA. I worked closely with the presenter and main host to guide the discussion, deliver questions, and help explore information from the speakers.
2. Producing Voice Reports from Pro 1 Dialogues
I was responsible for compiling and recording voice reports based on the dialogue broadcast at 11.00 WITA on Pro 1. These voice reports were presented as audio summaries containing key discussion points along with sound bites from the speakers, which were later rebroadcast as brief informational segments for listeners.
3. Writing Radio Fillers Based on Daily Topics
I was also responsible for writing radio filler scripts tailored to the main topic of the day. These fillers functioned as educational and informative interludes that supported the ongoing broadcast themes on Pro 1.
4. Editing Respondents’ Audio for VOXPOP
In addition to producing content, I conducted audio processing and editing of respondents’ voices collected from field interviews to be used as VOXPOP (Voice of the People) material. This activity included selecting relevant statements, improving audio quality, and arranging the audio flow to match the chosen topic and ensure it was suitable for broadcast.
5. Writing Straight News Scripts (Berita Lempang)
Lastly, I was tasked with writing straight news scripts based on dialogues broadcast at 09.00 WITA, 11.00 WITA, or 16.00 WITA. These news scripts were written concisely, clearly, and accurately, while adhering to radio journalism principles and the broadcasting character of RRI.
Beyond these five main responsibilities, interns were also allowed to take on optional additional tasks. These included serving as a host on Programa 2 (Pro 2), acting as a co-host on Pro 2, writing and recording English-language fillers for the Encyclo Bali program, participating in live field coverage, and many others. I personally chose to take on the role of co-host on Pro 2 discussing sports topics, as well as providing voice-over recordings for fillers prepared by the editorial team related to Public Service Announcements (PSA).
The Independent Internship Program at LPP RRI Denpasar provided a comprehensive understanding of the broadcasting workflow, starting from information gathering and scriptwriting, to recording processes and live broadcasting to listeners. In addition, this internship also fostered professional attitudes such as discipline, responsibility, and teamwork. Overall, my experience in the Independent Internship Program at LPP RRI Denpasar not only enhanced my technical skills and communication abilities, but also built self-confidence, interpersonal skills, and practical understanding that will serve as valuable assets in facing the professional world in the future.
I sincerely hope that Udayana University, especially the Faculty of Cultural Sciences, will continue to establish strong collaborations with institutions that can provide meaningful benefits for students in developing skills that will be useful for their future careers.
