Preparing Students for Global Careers, Udayana University's Japanese Literature Program Holds a Guest Lecture on Working in Japanese Restaurants

The Japanese Literature Study Program at the Faculty of Humanities, Udayana University, successfully held a Practitioner Guest Lecture titled "The Scope of Work in Japanese Restaurants" on Friday, June 12, 2026. The event featured Putu Ella Kumala Sari, a distinguished alumna from the class of 2014, as the main speaker, sharing her firsthand experience in Japan's Food and Beverage (F&B) industry.

The event was officially opened by the Vice Dean I of the Faculty of Humanities, Udayana University, Dr. I Gede Oeinada, S.S., M.Hum., at 1:00 PM WITA. This guest lecture was initiated as a bridge between Japanese language learning in the classroom and the realities of the global workforce, particularly within Japan's hospitality industry. The event also supports the achievement of SDG 1: No Poverty, by equipping students with the skills and access to global job opportunities so they can improve their quality of life independently and sustainably.

In her presentation, Ella openly walked through her career journey, from working as a Waitress at Dijon Cafe Bali, to Hall Staff at Gero Matsuba (Gifu Prefecture, Japan), and eventually Hall and Kitchen Staff at Grill Budou Tei (Osaka, Japan). She highlighted the importance of mental readiness and practical communication skills when working in a foreign environment. "Working in Japan's F&B industry demands a high level of discipline and strict punctuality. On top of that, you have to be ready to multitask, switching between serving in the hall and working in the kitchen depending on what the restaurant needs at any given moment," said Ella.

Ella also touched on the real challenges she faced on the ground, from adjusting to a new environment and extreme weather to the culture shock that many Indonesian workers experience in Japan.
