A Fruitful Four Months: Independent Internship Program at Dinas Kebudayaan Provinsi Bali

My name is Rebecca Karenia Hutagaol from Japanese Literature and I recently participated in an independent internship program at Dinas Kebudayaan Provinsi Bali. Thanks to The Ministry of Education, this program is made easily accessible to students who want to try to gain new experience outside of their major, without having to worry about their college grades and getting their studies interrupted.

I started the program in the beginning of my seventh semester on September 1st 2023. The administration process wasn’t too much of a hassle since our academic staff already handled most of the filing steps. And when the time finally arrives for us to go to our first day of work, I was very thrilled to know that we will be divided into different subdivisions. To work in a new field and meet new people in a new workplace, I believe that is the perfect first step in order to gain new knowledge.

I was placed in the Cultural Heritage and Museums division, along with two other colleagues. In the first month of the internship program, we were tasked with typing transcripts of Balinese mantras into digital files. It is such an eye-opening and refreshing experience since it was the first time I got exposed to a local ancient language, it sounds so foreign when I hear it for the first time. In the third week of the first month, we were relocated in UPTD Museum Bali as volunteers for a special event displaying different kinds of textiles from different places in Bali, Balinese Textile Temporary Exhibition. The event lasted for about 2 weeks, held from September 22nd 2023 until October 2nd 2023.

After the event ended, we were back to our status quo. But what's different is that we were given a new kind of special task. In order to help the staff with their work, we offered ourselves to help with making presentation slides for their monthly report of the irrigation’s maintainability in different Bali regions. This project was carried out in order to help the cultural heritage preservation of Bali irrigation landscapes. Furthermore, we also did a lot of research on the history of Balinese temples from different regions in Bali. The assignments gave us many new insightful knowledge about Balinese culture, a very enlightening experience for sure.

In conclusion, this experience wouldn’t be possible without the help of The Ministry of Education, which has facilitated this and many other programs. Also a huge appreciation towards the people who have helped with the registration process and the filings, the professors, people from Dinas Kebudayaan Provinsi Bali, and also to the colleagues I have spent the incomparable four months with. I am forever grateful for this unforgettable experience.
