Collaboration between Bunkyo Gakuin University Students and Udayana University Students in the Beyond SDGs Program
In the annual event entitled Road Of Euroasian Civilizations (REC), Bunkyo Gakuin University together with Earth Company invited Udayana University students to participate in the “Beyond SDGs” program. The event connected Bunkyo Gakuin University students and Udayana University students to participate in studying and providing ideas for tackling problems in the environment, especially around their respective campuses.
The first day of the activity was held on February 28, 2022 via the Zoom Meeting application. In the event, each student presented an individual project regarding the waste produced for one week. In addition, students are given the opportunity to listen to material from two influential people in the field of environmental care.
The first speaker was I Made Janur Yasa, founder of the “Plastic Exchange” program. He explained in detail, starting from the values obtained from the program, the process of exchanging plastic for rice, to the good impact it had on the environment and society. For the success of the Plastic Exchange program, I Made Janur Yasa managed to become one of the CNN Heroes.
The second speaker is a communication officer of Kopernik, Vanessa Harsamto. She explained about the collaboration campaign of "Plastic Island" to increase public awareness of single-use plastic. To support this campaign, “Pulau Plastik” makes a documentary film that can be accessed by the public and provides factual information about plastic problems in the world.
The second day has been held on March 1 2022 via online meeting. Almost the same as the previous day, students received several materials related to environmentally friendly activities. Tomo Hamakawa, president director of Earth Company introduced two influential people in the release of single-use plastic in Bali. They are sisters named Melati Wijsen and Isabel Wijsen.
In a video clip from The TED Talks Youtube channel, Melati and Isabel explain the state of waste in Bali and their program entitled “Bye-bye Plastic Bags”.
With various materials given by several speakers, both on the first day and on the second day, students were given an assignment where they had to look for an environmental problem in their respective campuses and provide an idea that could solve the problem. Each student was divided into 4 groups from Udayana University and 3 groups from Bunkyo Gakuin University. The results of the discussion from each group will be presented on the last day of the SDG program on March 8, 2022.
