Internship at Bali Japan International College (Sep-Jan)

My name is Aldo Setiawan. I am a student in the Japanese Literature Program currently in my fourth year when I am doing my independent internship. On this occasion, I had the opportunity to do an independent internship at a vocational campus that collaborates with Udayana University, namely Bali Japan International College.

Bali Japan International College is a vocational campus founded by Mr. I Made Sukadana Antara, often referred to as Made-sensei. Made-sensei himself is an alumni of Udayana University's first Japanese Literature class. In 2018, Made-sensei established a vocational campus called Bali Japan Academy, which later changed its name to Bali Japan International College.

At Bali Japan International College, as the activities involve preparing workforce for Japan, this vocational campus provides Japanese language learning as a fundamental knowledge. As a student from Udayana University's Japanese Literature program, I worked as a Professional Japanese Instructor. This job involves providing instruction to students enrolled at Bali Japan International College. I am also assigned to teach at SMK Saraswati Bali Japanic in Gianyar.

While this job may sound easy, the reality is quite different. Initially, I observed the teaching methods at Bali Japan International College. After a few days of observation, I started teaching in accessible classrooms. At first, I was a bit unsure because I felt I lacked the ability to teach. Hence, I felt a bit lacking in confidence in the early stages of this job.

I received various feedback and advice on how to teach effectively. However, the implementation turned out to be challenging. This is because, despite being students at Bali Japan, some of them are older than me in terms of age. Even though it was stated that age doesn't matter and they understood the rules, as a new intern, feelings of doubt were inevitable.

The challenges were not only in Bali Japan; I also faced issues when teaching at SMK Saraswati Bali Japanic. Some of them couldn't follow the Japanese language lessons well due to a lack of knowledge and the difficulty of Japanese language. As a Japanese language teacher, I was required to deliver the lessons clearly to all of them and I had to make the class become more interesting.

Initially, everything felt very difficult. However, with the help of Bali Japan sensei-gata, I began to build confidence in teaching in the classes I entered. I gained new knowledge and had the opportunity to review Japanese language materials that I already knew. This was one of the best experiences and a very useful learning experience for the future. I also realized that being a teacher is not easy. How we convey the material clearly to students, how we ensure that students always remember the material learned, how we socialize with students - all of these are crucial in the field of teaching.

I am grateful for all the opportunities I had for approximately four and a half months. In the final day of my internship, all teacher organized a small party to conclude my and my friend's internship. Despite being small and not luxurious, I was deeply touched by how well I was accepted. Despite the mistakes I made, I felt very welcomed by the employees at Bali Japan International College.

Of course, this is not the end of everything, and there are still stories to be continued. I want to express my gratitude to Udayana University and Bali Japan International College for making this possible. Despite some problems in the process, it cannot replace the togetherness and beautiful memories during the independent internship. Thus, I conclude my story of my experience at Bali Japan International College. To the next students, if you have the opportunity and want to learn how to teach very well, please try working at Bali Japan International College.
