LOCAL GAME DEVELOPMENT AT PT KINEMA SYSTRANS MULTIMEDIA CERTIFIED INDEPENDENT STUDY BATCH 5

The author's name is Nara Nabila Puspita, she’s a fourth-year Japanese literature major student at Udayana University. When the author will take part in MBKM (Free Learning Independent Campus) MSIB (Internship and Certified Independent Study) Batch 5 activities to register for the Independent Study program, she decided to register for MSIB because it is the last opportunity for her, because after finishing semester 7 and entering semester 8, she can no longer participate in MSIB activities because the remaining SKS (semester credit points) of hers are no longer sufficient.

The lengthy process of preparing documents and other MSIB program registration requirements, even though there are obstacles, the author is grateful that the grace of Allah SWT can make the process smoother. After completing the registration process, the author picked 13 of the 20 activity applications provided for Independent Study opportunities. The author finally received notification from Infinite Learning, a division of PT Kinema Systrans Multimedia (a subsidiary of Infinite Studios). The notification conveys that the author has been successfully accepted by Infinite Learning in all the positions the author applied, namely Android Mobile Application Development, Red Hat Certified System Administrator – IBM AI & Cybersecurity, Web Development and Local Game Development. The author is very grateful for that, after thinking carefully about which Independent Study activity to take, the final decision is taking Local Game Development.

The author reason to choose that activity is, she has dreamed of becoming a game developer since she was a child so she can create her own game by providing a fun and unforgettable experience for anyone who plays the game, because this is the dream of the author who got the inspiration from various games such as Persona the series games (Persona 1, 2, 3, 4 dan 5), Ib, Misao and other amazing games.

Local Game Development Independent Study held by Infinite Learning are carried out online or hybrid (Online and Offline, for participants located in Batam). The author takes part in the online learning activities. The activities take place from 14 August – 31 December 2023. Learning is carried out from Monday to Friday, unless there are additional classes on weekends or holidays. Every Friday there is a 'Mentoring Group' activity, a session where if Independent Study students experience problem they can discuss directly via voice call on Discord application with the group mentor of each group or the personal mentor of each participant. Especially if the mentor is not available on Friday for discussion, students can discuss with the mentor on another day when the mentor is free. The 'Local Game Development' Independent Study class activities were divided into two sessions, namely, the morning session at 09.00 - 12.00 WIB (Indonesian Western Time) and the afternoon session at 14.00 - 17.00 WIB.

PT Kinema Systrans Multimedia company, the institution that holds the Independent Study activities, is one of the largest companies in the Nongsa Batam Economy Zone and the Infinite Learning game development division has produced various games from previous batch of MSIB activities or from the mentors of game development itself. Nongsa Economy Zone is a Little Silicon Valley which is the only one in Indonesia and the author will certainly study in an international company environment. Every graduate from Infinite Learning will be prioritized to be offered and interviewed directly by multinational companies in the Nongsa Economy Zone ecosystem. Infinite Learning is affiliated with IBM (International Business Machines Corporation), Red Hat, Australia’s Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology, Epic Games, and several other big brand companies in the world. The author hopes that participating in the Independent Study program at this company will provide the opportunity to learn and work with this big world brand company.

The game developer position taken by the author when carrying out the 'Local Game Development' Independent Study activity was as a sound engineer, designer, level designer and game producer. The benefits that the author obtained while participating in Independent Study, are as follows:

  • Can find out what materials must be studied in making a game, how to apply these materials in the game making process and what applications can be used to make games.
  • The knowledge gained while participating in this activity is very useful because it will be an added value in getting a job apart from the knowledge gained from campus.
  • The author's participation in this activity, when looking for work in the future, the author hopes that she can easily get the job field she wants because she already has additional skills from participating in this program.

These benefits obtained because Infinite Learning is a company that focuses on developing vocational training courses that are relevant to Infinite Studios activities due to the increasing demand for skilled talent in the Nongsa Digital Park ecosystem. Through the expansion of its current internal training operations, Infinite Learning in 2018 obtained an LPK (Job Training Institute) license from the Indonesian Ministry of Manpower. This allows Infinite Learning to implement vocational training courses that are open to the public and can be used to collaborate with multinational educational institutions. Currently, Vocational Education activities are carried out under an LPK license for training at Nongsa Digital Park (NDP) in collaboration with the Apple Developer Academy, Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology Cyber Security Course and the Ministry of Education's Independent Study Program.

Many things were gained, such as getting various connections with mentors and other students from various fields with their respective different abilities, which made the author learn many things while studying and further solidified the author's desire to become a game developer when she is going to start working in the future.

The author's message to other students who will take part in the MBKM program is not to hesitate to register and take part in this program. Choose an MSIB activity that you are really interested in and want to learn so you don't give up halfway when you start doing it. Never be absent from class so you don't miss out on the material presented.
