Ready and Prepared to Face Disasters with Bali Kumara Kindergarten Children

The Udayana Serving Program (PUM) was again carried out with Disaster Preparedness Training for Early Childhood at the Bali Kumara Kindergarten, Gianyar. (6/8)

This activity was organized by the Institute for Research and Community Service (LP2M) of Udayana University, BPBD of Gianyar Regency, BPBD of Bali Province, and students of the Japanese Literature Study Program. The purpose of this activity is to increase children's preparedness in dealing with earthquake and tsunami disasters. Submissions given to children are wrapped in interesting and interactive activities.

This activity started with a story told by one of the students of the Japanese Literature Study Program using the storytelling technique using Kamishibai. The fairy tale entitled “Protect Yourself with the Boga Dragon and the Besuki Dragon” tells the story of two children who meet two dragons who lead them to learn how to save themselves from the earthquake and tsunami.

In addition to visuals and interactions, the next activity is singing children's songs with lyrics about things that don't need to be done during an earthquake. Together with Kak Yanti from BPBD, the children were invited to sing the song so as to improve their memory of the lessons that had been conveyed earlier. The activity continued by watching a video of how the difference between someone who saves himself in a good way and someone who saves himself in a bad way.

After delivering the material to the children, Mr. Agung from BPBD directed the children to simulate earthquake alert. The scenario begins with the teacher delivering the material as usual, then in the middle of the lesson there is the sound of a bat that indicates an earthquake. The children were directed not to panic and gather at the assembly point in an orderly manner. For children who are still in the classroom, they carry out rescues in the ways previously described, namely protecting their heads, taking cover under the table, and holding on to the table. When they feel safe, they are directed to gather together at the gathering point.

After several simulations, the activity continued with thanks from the Bali Kumara Kindergarten Teacher, BPBD, and Ms. Silvia Damayanti, S.S. M. Hum. as the head of the Udayana Serving Program (PUM). There was also the delivery of certificates, fairy tale illustrations, meeting point signs, and gifts for children to Bali Kumara Kindergarten. The activity closed with a group photo session and the distribution of food to the children.

With the implementation of this activity, it is hoped that the children will have the knowledge to deal with disasters that have the potential to occur in their area at any time. In addition, this activity is expected to continue to be carried out again, especially in the Bali Kumara Kindergarten in order to increase the knowledge of early childhood both in dealing with disasters and self-development.
