Student Perspective on the Governance Environment of the Bali Provincial Tourism Office: Arya Wira's Little Experience
My name is I Gusti Ngurah Arya Wira Pangestu, a seventh semester student in the Japanese Literature study program at Udayana University. I would like to share my experience when participating in an internship at one of the government agencies in Bali. At the end of the sixth semester, I enrolled in the MBKM Mandiri Internship program at the Bali Provincial Tourism Office. This program was carried out in collaboration with the Japanese Literature Study Program and the Faculty of Cultural Sciences of Udayana University with the government, especially the Bali Provincial Tourism Office. Initially I had participated in the Bina Desa program and had passed, but for some reason I was more interested in trying an internship in the world of government so I finally decided to take part in the internship for six months. According to information obtained, the internship at the Bali Provincial Tourism Office was the first time carried out by the Faculty of Cultural Sciences of Udayana University by sending four delegates. The delegation came from three Japanese Literature students and one Cultural Anthropology student. So in the end, I officially carried out activities at the Bali Provincial Tourism Office from September 3 to December 15, 2023.
In the internship, I got a position in the Tourism Destination Division in the Tourism Destination Development Division which is focused on developing tourism in Bali. During my daily activities, I only assisted office staff in carrying out activities such as participating in tourism socialization to several regions such as Jembrana, collecting data on tourist visits from various tours from eight districts in Bali, discussions with the head of the field related to tourism development in Bali, and had become a committee of Jegeg Bagus Bali in the Bali Tourism Ambassador. Unfortunately, when I interned at the Bali Provincial Tourism Office there were not too many activities carried out because previously the activities in the field had been carried out at the beginning of 2023 so that the internship I felt at that time was quite relaxed and not too busy. Working hours at the Bali Provincial Tourism Office for 5 days are Monday to Friday from 07.30 to 15.30 WITA. The clothes used on Monday to Wednesday for interns use clothes made from Endek, Thursday using Balinese traditional clothes. However, for Friday I experienced a change of clothes due to the policy of the PJ Governor of Bali where initially every Friday wore sportswear but after the Governor of Bali finished his term and was temporarily replaced by the PJ Governor so that Friday changed to Endek clothes.
The indirect learning that I got during the internship was also very much, I learned how to have good work ethics in the world of government, how to increase discipline among employees, how to foster a sense of initiative, how to speak well when meeting government parties, and how to learn to use time well. Because in these activities as an intern I am required to learn to be on time in carrying out various activities because if not it will harm many parties. I was very happy to take this opportunity because I found many new relationships that I had never met before. During the six months, I was also very grateful to be placed in a room where people were very kind, friendly, and fun so that it did not cause boredom when I was in the room. However, because there were not too many activities, I only spent time inside the office.
Although the correlation of the courses I took in the Japanese Literature study program was not widely used in this activity, I can apply it in the future if I one day work in a tourism environment. Because the field that correlates to the existing courses in the Japanese Literature study program is more into the Tourism Promotion Field, not in the field that I studied during the internship. However, this makes my valuable experience during college because I can experience the world of government work itself and understand the characteristics of tourism, and understand the issues regarding the development of tourism in Bali. Hopefully, by sharing this experience and as one of the first students to participate in the collaboration between the faculty and the Bali Provincial Tourism Office, more students, especially from the Japanese Literature study program, can participate, because in the future there are still very many issues that develop in the world of tourism that can be used as learning materials and problem-solving discussions. Japanese is also one of the international languages that are in demand by the public, so that the lessons learned in the campus can be applied when plunging into the world of tourism later, especially in the scope of discussion of tourism and Japanese tourists.
