From Moringa Leaves to Business Opportunity: The Experience of a Japanese Literature Student at Udayana University in the Independent Entrepreneurship Program Batch 2

My name is Ni Wayan Kayani, a student of the Japanese Literature Study Program at Udayana University (Class of 2022), had the privilege of participating in the Independent Entrepreneurial Program (MBKM Wirausaha Merdeka Mandiri) for five months, from March 18 to July 31, 2025. This program provided valuable hands-on experience in the field of entrepreneurship, conducted at an agriculture-based enterprise, CV Timan Agung, located in Tabanan Regency. It became a pivotal moment in my academic journey as it not only broadened my knowledge beyond literature but also equipped me with practical skills applicable to my future career.

Although my academic background is not related to entrepreneurship or agriculture, this did not pose a significant challenge. Instead, it presented an exciting opportunity to explore a completely new field. I discovered that entrepreneurship is closely connected to creativity, innovation, and adaptability to market demands. I also learned how simple ideas, when properly managed and developed, can transform into high-value products with great commercial potential.

The program was divided into three main stages: pre-immersion, immersion, and post-immersion. In the pre-immersion stage, we received comprehensive entrepreneurial training both online and offline. The training covered topics such as entrepreneurial mindset, opportunity observation, and business idea validation. The sessions were led by competent speakers and accompanied by individual and group assignments to deepen our understanding. Moreover, we studied Transformational Leadership and Agile Ways of Working, learning how to lead effectively and adopt flexible work approaches—skills highly relevant in today’s dynamic business environment.

The immersion stage was the most memorable part of the program, as it involved direct learning at CV Timan Agung. Here, we observed and participated in various processes, including production techniques, branding, marketing strategies, and sales management. We were also introduced to the Business Model Canvas (BMC) and effective pitching methods. These insights greatly assisted us in developing a business concept based on moringa leaves, which we aimed to turn into food and beverage products with flavors resembling matcha or green tea.

Finally, during the post-immersion stage, we joined a bootcamp and Demo Day, where we presented and promoted our innovative products to mentors and potential consumers. This stage trained us to deliver professional presentations and respond critically to feedback. As a result, our team successfully launched Midorikko.id (緑っ子), a brand offering three innovative products: Moringa Cookies, Moringa Chocolate, and Moringa Latte. These products represent a fusion of healthy local ingredients with modern culinary trends, proving that moringa has tremendous potential to be developed into high-value food and beverage items.

Overall, this program enriched my knowledge of entrepreneurship and provided first-hand experience in teamwork, administrative accuracy, and problem-solving. I feel more confident in pursuing creative ideas and believe that the skills and insights I gained will serve as a strong foundation for my future personal growth and career development. I highly recommend this program to fellow students who wish to step out of their comfort zones and gain real world practical experience.
